What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment, meaning that it has been proven by research to be effective for a wide range of disorders.  CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented intervention that takes a proactive and practical approach to problem-solving.

Rather than an in-depth focus on past experience, CBT emphasizes the here and now and aims to teach the client to become their own therapist.

CBT is centered on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviors.

By learning skills to identify and change unhelpful thought and behavioral patterns, clients will achieve their goals and observe noticeable improvements in their mental and emotional state in a short time.

What is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of therapy often used to help people with anxiety disorders, especially those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Here's a breakdown of its key components:

1. Exposure: This involves gradually and systematically exposing the individual to situations, thoughts, or objects that trigger their anxiety or obsessive thoughts. The exposure is done in a controlled way, starting with less anxiety-provoking scenarios and progressively moving to more challenging ones. The idea is to help individuals confront their fears and realize that the anxiety will diminish over time.

2. Response Prevention: This part focuses on preventing the individual from engaging in their usual compulsive behaviors or rituals that they perform to reduce anxiety. For example, if someone has an obsession with cleanliness and feels the urge to wash their hands repeatedly, the therapist will encourage them to resist that urge after exposure. This helps break the cycle of anxiety and compulsive behavior. The overall goal of ERP is to help individuals reduce their anxiety and compulsive behaviors, allowing them to lead a more fulfilling life. By facing fears and learning to tolerate anxiety without resorting to compulsive behaviors, individuals can gain more control over their thoughts and actions.
