FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • From start to finish, therapy is a collaborative process.  Everything is voluntary and individualized to meet the clients’ specific treatment needs and goals. Therapy begins with an evaluation, which typically takes 1-2 appointments.  After the initial evaluation, I will offer some impressions of what our work might include and a treatment plan to follow. If we decide to work together, we’ll schedule once- or twice-weekly 45-minute sessions.

  • During the pandemic, I learned that online therapy can be very effective. However, I do not offer online therapy for kids under 12 years. And, if I'm honest, I always prefer to have you in the office and face to face.

I offer virtual therapy in the states in which I am licensed: NY and NJ

  • I get this question all the time and it is one of the hardest to answer. Determining the length of treatment often depends on the client’s goals and individual case formulation, as well as motivation and progress. My clients can expect therapy to be problem-focused and relatively short-term, typically lasting between 3-12 months. Some clients prefer to remain in treatment longer term to maintain gains and access to support.

  • Please call or email to discuss my fee. I do not work directly with insurance companies, but if you have a PPO or another plan that allows you to select an out-of-network provider, you may be eligible for reimbursement. I provide a monthly Superbill, which can be submitted to your insurance company for direct reimbursement to you. Policies vary significantly, and I recommend checking with your insurance company to determine the extent of your out-of-network mental health (or “behavioral health”) benefits, including your annual deductible, the number of sessions covered per calendar year, and whether your sessions need to be pre-authorized.

*Accepted forms of payment include cash, check, and credit card. Payment is due at the time of your session.

  • Should you need to cancel your session unexpectedly, at least 24-hours notice is required.  For sessions that are missed or canceled with less than 24 hours notice clients are financially responsible for the full fee for the missed session regardless if the appointment is rescheduled for that same week.

  • Effective January 1, 2022, a ruling went into effect called the "No Surprises Act," which requires mental health practitioners to provide a "Good Faith Estimate" (GFE) to patients who do not have insurance or patients who have insurance but are out-of-network.

The Good Faith Estimate's purpose is to show the cost of services to avoid an unreasonably large bill. Your treatment and cost of treatment will vary based on your individual needs, amount of therapy sessions needed/wanted, and the type and length of services you attend.  Please remember you can always discuss billing, cost, treatment plan, length of sessions, and amount of sessions with me at any time.

Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, health care providers and health care facilities are required to inform individuals who are not enrolled in a plan or coverage or a Federal health care program, or not seeking to file a claim with their plan or coverage both orally and in writing of their ability, upon request or at the time of scheduling health care items and services, to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

    • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.

    • You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

    • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

    • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
